Error with Norton Ghost

Because this situation has a variety of causes, no one solution will work in every case. To resolve the problem, try each of the following solutions.

Dynamic Disks
When all the hard disks on your computer are configured as Dynamic Disks, you may see this message if the disks use advanced disk configurations such as striping or RAID. Ghost can clone only Simple Dynamic Disks and Mirrored Dynamic Disks, and not other types of Dynamic Disks. See the document Ghost compatibility with Dynamic partitions.

Computer's BIOS
You may see this message when the computer's BIOS is configured to "None" for one of the hard drives. Changing the BIOS setting to Auto or Auto Detect will usually resolve the problem.

Configuration of IDE hard disks
You may see this message when the computer has two IDE hard drives and they have been incorrectly configured for the physical master and slave relationship. Note this master and slave configuration refers to the installation of the hard drives, and not to the master and slave choices that you make in Ghost.

When they are incorrectly configured in this way, the computer's BIOS does not recognize the disks. Windows accesses and uses the disks without problems but DOS (and therefore Ghost) cannot access the drives.

To determine whether this is the problem, look at the computer's BIOS settings to determine whether the BIOS detects both drives. Consult the documentation from your computer's manufacturer for instructions on accessing the computer's BIOS.

To resolve the problem, change the drive installation so that each IDE channel has one master drive and one slave drive. Note that in some cases, choosing an auto-select function on the drive's jumpers may not resolve the problem for correctly designating the master and slave drives. In that case, use a jumper setting that specifics master or slave, rather than a setting the auto-detects the master and slave.

External Firewire and USB drives
Follow these steps, in sequence, to resolve this issue.

  1. Ensure that you have the appropriate USB driver selected. In Ghost, click Options, then choose "USB peer-to-peer settings." For information on your specific USB controller, consult your computer's user's manual, or contact the manufacturer's techncal support.
  2. The Plug and Play OS support in the computer BIOS must be disabled for the Firewire, USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 to work.
  3. If you are using USB 2.0, disable the build in USB 1.1 port as well as any other USB support in the BIOS. For details on how to do this, contact the computer manufacturer.
  4. If you are using USB 1.1, run LiveUpdate to download the latest Norton Ghost 2003 patch.
  5. Symantec does not support plugging the external drive into a Firewire or USB PCMCIA card on a laptop.
  6. If the Firewire or USB 2.0 devices still do not work, it may be due to multiple controllers installed on the computer. If there is an onboard controller, remove the add-in controller. If there is more than one PCI card controllers, remove one of the controllers.
  7. Sometimes, the Firewire driver may take some time to initialize. To extend the amount of time the driver has to initialize, try using a boot floppy.
